Biographical sketch:
Irène Demczuk is a sociologist, researcher, author and lesbian activist who works to promote the rights of lesbians and LGBTQ2S+ individuals. She has been a coordinator and trainer at the Service aux collectivités de l’Université du Québec in Montreal and a lecturer in women’s studies programs at the University of Ottawa and the University of Sherbrooke.
During the Commission des droits de la personne du Québec’s public consultation in 1993, Irène Demczuk served as coordinator of the Caucus lesbien, an organization dedicated to promoting and defending the rights and freedoms of lesbians and offering support to lesbians wishing to testify at the Commission’s hearings. The Commission des droits de la personne du Québec’s public consultation led to the publication of the report De l’illégalité à l’égalité : Rapport de consultation publique sur la violence et la discrimination envers les gais et lesbiennes in 1994.
In 1996, Irène Demzcuk became involved with the Groupe d’intervention en violence conjugale chez les lesbiennes (GIVCL), which founded the Centre de solidarité lesbienne (CSL). In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she was involved in numerous LGBTQ2S+ family rights issues, such as same-sex unions and adoption rights, as well as assisted reproduction rights for lesbians. Between 1995 and 2001, she worked with the Comité pour la reconnaissance des lesbiennes and participated in the formulation of the lesbian demands of the 2000 Women’s March.
Irène Demczuk edited the publication Le droit à reconnaître : les lesbiennes face à la discrimination (1998), co-edited Sortir de l’ombre : histoire des communautés gaie et lesbienne de Montréal (1998) and co-authored La reconnaissance des couples de lesbiennes : un droit sans équivoque (2002). She has written numerous other publications on raising awareness of sexual and gender diversity and family issues, such as demystifying homosexuality in schools and preventing domestic violence.
Scope and content:
The fonds documents Irène Demczuk’s activist and professional activities in support of the recognition of the rights of lesbians and LGBTQ2S+ individuals in Quebec, mainly in the 1990s and 2000s.
The fonds contains 162 centimetres of textual documents in the form of analyses and research reports, correspondence, administrative documentation, notes and legal documentation. It also includes approximately 75 photographs documenting feminist and lesbian activities in the 1980s.
