Fonds Naches. – 1977-1982. – 15 cm of textual records.

 

 

 

Administrative history:

 

Naches, founded in 1974, is the first gay Jewish group in Montreal. Naches has four objectives: (1) to bring valuable social contacts to gay people, (2) to encourage gay people to communicate and relate to each other first, and to the rest of the world, (3) to introduce gay culture to people who have an interest in, or want to become more comfortable with, the gay lifestyle, (4) to inform the Montreal community about the existence of Naches, the activities it organizes and the services it offers to the community. Anyone could become a member. Naches worked very hard to become a strong voice for the gay Jewish community, both within and outside the Jewish community. One example of Naches’ tenacity is the group’s reaction when it was discriminated against. The YM-YWHA refused to reserve a hall for Naches, apparently because it was a gay group. Naches filed a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission and the refusal was eventually overturned. Naches was also active as a social group, organizing plays, holiday suppers, picnics and other social events. Harvey Blackman was president of Naches during its most active years. Naches ceased trading in the 1980s.

 

 

Scope and content:

 

The collection documents the activities of the Naches group. The documents were produced between 1974 and 1982.

 

The fonds contains mainly correspondence, minutes, agendas and other textual documents related to Naches’ activities.

Source of title proper: Title based on the contents of the fonds.

 

Immediate source of acquisition: The fonds was transferred to the AGQ in 1986 by Harvey Blackman (acquisition 1986-02).

 

Arrangement: The documents were not in any discernible order, but there was an order. This order was maintained.

 

Language: The records are in English, French, and Hebrew.
