Biographical sketch:

 

Activist Danny (Daniel) Frankel was a member of the Groupe Homosexuel d’Action politique (GHAP), founded in March 1975. He became a member of the Gay Social Services Project the same year.

 

 

Administrative history:

 

The Gay Social Services Project was founded in Montreal in 1975 by Miriam Boghen, a social worker employed by the Family Service Association, who went on to coordinate the project under the aegis of the Centre de Services Sociaux Ville-Marie. The project offers a number of support services, including the Gay Line telephone line, opened in 1976 and operated by volunteers. The French-language Gai Écoute hotline (now called Interligne), also operated by volunteers, opened in 1980 and was taken over by the ADGQ in 1983.

 

 

Scope and content:

 

The fonds bears witness to the foundation and activities of the Gay Social Services Project: psychological support, support groups, conferences and a telephone helpline.

 

The fonds contains project proposals, reports, correspondence, procedures, minutes of meetings, student papers written by Danny (Daniel) Frankel and Ron Turley, project histories and descriptions of services offered, a list of Gay Line call categories with statistics, a volunteer handbook, press releases, a job posting, press clippings and a Gai Écoute leaflet.

Immediate source of acquisition: The fonds was transferred to the AGQ on 25 May 1990 by the fonds’ creator (acquisition 1990-06).
