Biographical sketch:
Douglas Esmond Sanders, born in 1938, is a Vancouver lawyer and Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia Law School. He is one of the founders of the Association for Social Knowledge (ASK), which became Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada (LGLC). He defends the rights of LGBTQ+ people and indigenous peoples around the world. He was secretary of The North American Conference of Homophile Organizations (NACHO), which held a conference in Chicago in 1968. He has published articles in Humans Rights Quarterly and Criminal Law Quarterly.
Scope and content:
The collection bears witness to the solidarity between North American gay communities in defence of their rights, and demonstrates the difficulties encountered in setting up gay community organizations in the late 1960s.
The fonds contains correspondence, mainly with Paul Bédard, the founder of the Association for International Sexual Legality. There is a copy of a letter to Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and documents concerning the Gemini Club.
