Biogrpahical sketch:

Alain Emmanuel Dreuilhe was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1949. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Cambodia and Vietnam. In 1962, the Dreuilhe family returned to France. After secondary school, he continued his education at the Institut d’études politiques in Paris. He later wrote a thesis entitled “Marcel Proust et les nationalismes”, which he presented at the Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).

A. E. Dreuilhe has travelled extensively. He taught in Rio de Janeiro for a year and worked in Cameroon as a legal adviser and translator. In 1977, he decided to move to the United States and obtained a position as a translator at the UN. He was a correspondent for the newspaper Gai Pied in New York and also wrote articles for the magazine Le Berdache.

In New York in 1983, he fell in love with a young man called Mark. Mark contracted AIDS and died in 1985. In 1984, Alain Emmanuel tested positive for HIV.

In 1987, he wrote Corps à Corps, journal de SIDA, published by Gallimard. In the form of a diary, this work recounts the evolution of his illness. It was also one of the first works on the subject. He also appeared on the Apostrophes program on 30 October 1987.

Alain Emmanuel Dreuilhe died of AIDS at the age of 39 on 28 November 1988 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York.

The fonds bears witness to the life of Alain Emmanuel Dreuilhe, particularly as regards the writing of his work Corps à Corps.

The fonds contains an annotated typescript of the preliminary version of Corps à Corps dating from 1987.
