Biographical sketch:
The Centre communautaire des gais et lesbiennes de Montréal (CCGLM) was founded on 17 August 1988. Its mission is “to provide Montreal’s LGBT community with a common space where organizations and individuals interested in improving the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people can come together through education, information and research”, and it aims “to improve the quality of life of the people in our community by providing the tools needed to achieve these goals (formation of study, research, welcome and information committees)” (Centre communautaire LGBTQ+ de Montréal, n.d.).
The Centre was recognized as a charitable organization on 7 June 1990. The CCGLM was a member of the Coalition des organismes des minorités sexuelles de Montréal-Métropolitain (COMSMM), which fought in particular for reform of the Civil Code of Quebec to grant rights to same-sex spouses. It suspended its membership of the Coalition on 25 March 1992.
On 13 July 2016, the CCGLM adopted a more inclusive name: the Centre communautaire LGBTQ+ de Montréal (CCLGBTQ+). The CCLGBTQ+ is currently home to the Open Book Library (created in 1991) and the Legal Information Centre.
