Biographical sketch:
Thomas P. Convey is a poet and cook born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on April 24, 1956. He is said to have lived in Winnipeg until 1980. He began his academic career at the University of Manitoba in 1974 and graduated with honours in English in 1979. He began writing poems, journalistic pieces, reviews and essays for his literature courses in the early 1970s. His first publications were printed in The Manitoban, the University of Manitoba’s student newspaper. He left Winnipeg in 1980 for Montreal.
Exhausted by critical writing, he decided in 1981 to write a master’s thesis in creative writing at Concordia. He also wrote a play entitled Interface, which was never published. In 1982, he destroyed all the poetry he had written previously.
Thomas P. Convey worked and travelled during and between his studies. In 1982 he worked as a cook in Montreal, submitting his MA thesis in November 1983. He then lived in Paris (ca. 1984), working in a restaurant and writing poetry. He returned to live in Montreal for a short time with Ken Morrison, with whom he had a romantic relationship, and then moved to Toronto. He died of AIDS in 1988, at the age of 32, and was buried in Winnipeg.
