Fonds Brigitte Laurier/Jeanne d’Arc Jutras. – [194-?]-2013. – 17 cm of textual records and other records.

Biographical sketch:

Jeanne d’Arc Jutras was a journalist, novelist, and lesbian activist born in Sainte-Brigitte-des-Saults on February 14, 1927. She was particularly concerned with the recognition of civil rights and freedoms, as well as the struggle for women’s emancipation. She was also the director of the ADGQ’s anti-repression committee and organized a demonstration on October 21, 1977, following police arrests at the Truxx bar.

In a 1977 interview, she confessed that she had her child taken away from her when she was 20 because she was considered homosexual.

Jeanne d’Arc Jutras began her writing career following a short interview on female homosexuality, which led her to write her first novel, Georgie, published in 1978 by Éditions de la Pleine Lune. She went on to publish two other novels, Délira Cannelle, in 1983, and Plaxie Pilon, in 1988. Jeanne d’Arc Jutras also contributed to various periodicals, including Le Devoir, La Presse, Le Journal de Montréal, Montréal-Matin, and Madame. She wrote the “Chronique en zig zag” column in Le Berdache, the magazine of the Association pour les droits des gai(e)s du Québec (ADGQ), in which she “defended lesbians.” She also participated in several television and radio programs on homosexuality.

Jeanne d’Arc Jutras died of cancer at Saint-Luc Hospital on June 7, 1992, at the age of 65.

The Archives gaies du Québec have very little information about Brigitte Laurier. Brigitte Laurier was in a relationship with Jeanne d’Arc Jutras and greatly admired her. She studied literature at the University of Montreal and the University of Quebec.
