Fonds Dan Rice. – 1965-[1995]. – 20 cm of textual records and other records.

 

 

Biographical sketch:

 

Born in 1961 in Kahnawà:ke, Dan Rice was a community worker who spent many years fighting HIV/AIDS.

 

He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Southern California. After working in San Diego, he moved to Montreal around 1987, where he became a founding member of AIDS Community Care Montreal (ACCM), a community organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness in Montreal’s English-speaking community. He served twice on the Board of Directors and as Director of Communications.

 

Dan Rice has worked in HIV/AIDS prevention with many Indigenous communities in Canada, including the Keewatin Regional Health Board, the National Aboriginal P.W.A. Working Group in Vancouver, and communities in northern Quebec. He has served as an HIV/AIDS representative and consultant for the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa.

 

He died of AIDS on 7 January 1994.

 

 

Scope and content:

 

The fonds documents the involvement of an Indigenous community worker in HIV/AIDS prevention among Indigenous and English-speaking communities in Montreal. The fonds also documents Dan Rice’s personal life as a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community and a person living with HIV, including his relationships with family and friends and his medical situation.

 

The fonds contains 20 centimetres of documents in the form of correspondence, medical records, financial documentation, miscellaneous notes, commemorative publications, drawings, and photographs.

Physical description: The fonds contains approximately 220 photographs, around 20 drawings, 1 wallet, 1 passport, 2 badges, 1 laminated poster and a signed book.

 

Immediate source of acquisition: The fonds was transferred to the Archives gaies du Québec in 2016 by David Cassidy (acquisition 2016-026).

 

Language: The documents are mainly in English. Some documents are in French.
