Biographical sketch :

 

Alan Wong is a teacher and LGBTQ2S+ activist from Montreal. He obtained his PhD from Concordia University in 2013, focusing on Indigenous and racial minority LGBTQ2S+ communities. He has been involved with GLAM (Gay and Lesbian Asians of Montreal), founded in 1993. The organization aims to provide community support for the unique issues faced by LGBTQIA+ people of Asian descent.

 

Between 2005 and 2011, Alan Wong helped to coordinate and run Journées ethnoculturelles, initially organized by Helem and later by the organization Ethnoculture, which brings together socio-cultural events aimed at raising the profile of LGBTQ2S+ people from ethnocultural communities, such as community days, performances, exhibitions, workshops, talks and film screenings.

 

Between 2006 and 2009, he served as co-chair and secretary of the MultiMundo Coalition, an organization bringing together groups and individuals in Montreal who work with LGBTQ2S+ people from ethnocultural communities.

 

Alan Wong is also a founding member of the Qollectif Qouleur, the Progressive Chinese Montrealers Social Club, the Living Histories Theatre Ensemble, the Montreal Third Space Playback Theatre, and AGIR, an organization supporting LGBTQIA+ refugees and migrants. Since 2011, he has been teaching in the Department of English at Vanier College.

 

 

Scope and content :

 

The fonds documents cultural events organized by groups of Indigenous, Black and people of colour within the LGBTQ2S+ community in Montreal during the 1990s and 2000s.

 

The fonds comprises 32 centimetres of textual material in the form of correspondence, administrative documents, promotional material (leaflets, brochures, posters), and meeting minutes. It also contains two exhibition guest books. The fonds also contains approximately 10 hours of video on VHS and DVD, covering the activities of GLAM (Gay and Lesbian Asians of Montreal), Ethnoculture, and Coalition MultiMundo, as well as two documentaries on Two-Spirit and Muxe Indigenous people. It also contains digital photographs of GLAM and Ethnoculture activities.

Physical description: The fonds also contains 3.5 GB of text documents, 35.9 MB of photographic material, 8.2 MB of visual material (posters), 4 DVDs, 2 CDs, 5 VHS tapes, 1 banner and 2 posters.

 

Immediate source of acquisition: The fonds was donated to the AGQ in 2022 by the fonds’ creator (acquisition 2022-041).

 

Language: The records are in French and English.

 

Related groups of records in different fonds external to the unit being described: The kimpo kim AGQ-F0212 fonds contains documents relating to Qouleur and Coalition Multimundo (S1). The documents date from 2007 to 2015.
