Biographical sketch:
Born in Thetford Mines (Quebec) in 1962, André Landry studied piano, graphic design and fine art. He holds a Master of Arts (Art and Education) from UQÀM.
Whilst studying for his Master’s degree in Fine Art at UQÀM, André Landry explored the theme of the ‘treasure object’, particularly in relation to the journey of his then partner, Alain Bouchard (1954–1994), who was living with AIDS.
André Landry took part in several exhibitions in the 1990s, mainly at the UQÀM Centre de diffusion des étudiants de la maîtrise en arts plastiques de l’UQÀM.
André Landry has been living in Paris with his partner, Yann, since 1996. They became fathers in 2010.
Scope and content:
The fonds bears witness to the ordeal experienced by a gay couple as they faced AIDS. It provides insight into what it was like to live with the disease in the era before triple therapy, in the early 1990s. More specifically, André Landry’s self-referential artistic approach to his partner’s illness and death bears witness to the intimacy of grief and the closeness of a couple facing death.
The fonds contains a master’s thesis, exhibition programs, articles, and two photographic works: « Je m’ouvre au matin comme l’éveil / Et pourtant j’ai le regard figé sur la fin » et « Comme une vague ». (Translation: ‘I open myself in the morning like awakening / And yet my gaze is fixed on the end’ and ‘Like a wave’.)
The fonds contains the following series:
